Cuts like a knife

There is a certain relationship between the length of hair and rock. You cut the long hair and the music goes for a toss.

The other day I was watching a stage act of The Who, which seemed rather a geriatrics health practice of short haired Pete Townsend and Roger Daltry. The same applies to Metallica, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam.

With albums like Kill ‘em All, Ride the Lightning, …And Justice for All and The Black Album in there stead, Metallica took the plunge and did a scissor to the head. And then, not only did they produce Load but went on to strengthen my argument with Re-Load. And I won’t even bother mentioning St. Anger.

The rock behemoth that Aerosmith once was when they did songs like Mama Kin, Sweet Emotion, Walk this way and Train kept’a rollin (Originally by The Yardbirds), they sacrificed the music along with their hair after that. Listen to the album Just Push Play and you know that it’s not the same Aero which could send you to fits of adrenaline with the thomp.
Thank god Led Zepp got defunct before they got a chance to have a go at the scalps…

Perhaps the two slight exceptions to this are Iron Maiden and Mark Knopfler. Mr. Knopfler because he never had very long hair but still made some great music (both in Dire Straits and solo) while Maiden guys, in spite of the hair-loss, are still making some good albums. But even they don’t have anything to match their earlier repertoire of the self titled Iron Maiden, Number of the Beast, and Piece of mind albums.
